***IF you are having problems reading or posting to the message board***

In February 2001 we replaced the message board.  If you can not post to the new message board it may be because you are posting from within a domain or IP# that has previously been reported for abuse.  Only a few domains and IP#'s are banned but it is possible that legitimate and interested people might be locked out for some reason.  If you can not view or post please email me from your original ISP mailbox so I can attempt to correct the problem.  I'll need the email to come from your ISP so we can get the ISP # from the header/footer of the email.

In the event of abuse we reserve the right to convert the forum to moderated status.  Posts are then held until approved.  This is to limit exposure to lawsuits.  Unfortunately there are people that try to bring down local radio message boards by posting false and defamatory information.  You do not have a Constitutional right to post anything you want on an Internet message board.  The First Amendment does not guarantee access to such a forum.  Only by implementing responsible standards can such forums stay active.

Tips for posting to the  Philly Talk Radio Online Message Board

Forum URL http://www.voy.com/13929/
To insert a link to the Forum on your site copy and paste the code below

The active threads are automatically relocated at the top of the page.

Active threads still go to the top even though a reply has not yet been approved.

If you click on the first reply in a thread the rest should (might) show up on the same page, this saves time.

Replies will appear under the subject you are replying to.  The text of the reply will be hidden. You must click a link to view a reply.  OR you can type your short reply -- into the "SUBJECT" Field.

Do everybody a favor and don't post with "ALL CAPS"  this is a waste of space and unreadable.  Lengthy posts with all caps will be deleted.

Keep in mind that information posted on our Rant and Rave forum is public.
Posting your email address is optional.

Reading tip:  To scan for all new posts try using the Control+F keys to bring up the find window.  Type in the month and date in this format ... 01/05 for January 5th.  Then type find hit the "Find" key, use the scroll bar to slide down the page while reading the post.  Then hit "Find" again for the next post for that day.

How to post a link...

<a href="URL">TEXT TO DISPLAY</a>

You'll need to replace "URL" above with the full address to the site, include the http:// and then replace "TEXT TO DISPLAY" with the text you'd like the user to click on in order to go to the URL.

Email link...Not needed on this board since there is a field provided.

Message Board FAQ's and Guidelines

Quick Outline of rules

More than one person has access to the message board administration page.  Sometimes one of the ladies run the board.  Please watch your language!

Rude & offensive posts are not welcome.  When the board is in moderated mode every chance to let controversial posts through will be made.  Common sense rules apply.  This forum is for information and entertainment.  Nobody likes it clogged up by morons.

This website is not here for your pet hatreds. Don't like it?  Get your own website.  Harassing posts are saved to file for forwarding to the IP for review.  Repeated abuse by the same person will result in a compliant to your ISP even though the posts do not make it on the board.  Abusive posts are saved along with your IP#.  Abusive IP#s are shared with other message board administrators.

Profanity is not acceptable.  __________underlines and #^$%! are OK.

Watch the fancy html posting.  The #1 reasons posts are missing is because the code is messed up.  Different browsers read the page differently.  Netscape is not as forgiving as MSIE.

Unproductive posts do not contribute the the health of any message board.  Empty posts, profanity, slurs, repetitive negativity (beating a dead horse) will be deleted.

Message boards are supposed to be FUN.  Lighten up!  Just like leaning on the horn won't change the driving habits of the jerk that just cut you off, you won't change the world and magically make everybody agree with you here no matter how strongly you tell them how much a host or station "sucks" ... it's radio after all, it's primarily an entertainment medium.  You are expected to contribute to a quality message board, one that is informative, entertaining and fun to read.  If you don't have what it takes to create a worthwhile post it won't get on the board.  You may not agree and that is your right, just don't expect me to alter my motivation for providing this site and message board.  If it is not fun that there is no point in it.  I am unyielding in this.

You may not repeatedly reply to your own posts/threads using multiple fictitious names with the intent to create a "buzz" or false level of interest regarding your post.

Posts promoting your own business or URL are conditional upon you either; contributing to the content of this site or, contributing to one of my favorite charities.

It's not your opinion that is screened, it is the words and manner.  By "manner" we mean that if it becomes clear that a post is part of an overall campaign of harassment then it will be dumped.

Q - What does (n/t) mean.  A - (n/t) is placed after a reply link to state the there is "No Text" in the message body.  When you see that you don't have to bother clicking on the reply.  n/t is automatically placed, you need not type it in.

Q - Why do you screen the posts?
A - Sometimes posts are unscreened and sometimes the board is set up to be moderated.  1% of the people that post can't be trusted to follow any civilized guidelines of any kind.  It takes less time to screen the messages before they are posted than to reread the entire page and replies every day searching for one freaking bozo.  This is all about making it less work for me.  Unlimited free speech does not apply here. Don't like it?  Get your own message board.  Based on past experience those most likely to abuse the message board have some personal agenda and won't listen to reason.  I'll leave the reckless forums that post death threats to others.

Q - I messed up my post, can do you delete it for me?
A -  Sometimes people reflect on a venomous post and ask me to go back and delete it for them, that is ok.  It is time consuming to delete a post.  I don't delete posts for spelling, that is a normal part of posting and should be understood by the reader.

About "Free Speech" and why the Forum is screened
Once in a while I get a complaint about the Forum being screened.  As part of the argument they quote our header that states, "This site is BY listeners FOR listeners."  Usually there is some petty complaint about how they don't get to go on and on either trashing me, this site or some local host.  Their argument is that if this site is really BY and FOR all of us they should have plenty of space for their own opinion.  Get this straight, the people who are kind enough to contribute time to support this site get to say how it is run.  All that effort is for You, the listener.  If after all of our effort you still think we suck that's fine.  If you want to constantly post negative remarks full of profanity and threats that don't either contribute in any meaningful way or have any connection to reality... don't bother.  Get a life.  If hate is all that is in your heart then we really don't care what you think and neither do the hosts.  The message board is for those that "get it", if you don't, too bad.  The only people I let yell at me (as far as this site goes) are the "minions" and the hosts.

Make no mistake about it.  No matter what kind of disclaimer I post I am ultimately responsible for the content on the message board.  It will be my ass that gets sued if I permit slander to remain on the board.  Usually the same people who complain about the board being screened are the same ones that abuse it by posting threats or slanderous content.  They even try to seek revenge against people who they have committed some wrong against them.  More often than not it is they who have been caught doing some wrong against the host and seek revenge on the Internet.  I have catalogued several such instances and banned those people from posting.  They have since gone elsewhere but sadly continue their behavior.

It has been my experience that people who take the time to thoughtfully compose a post do so because they hope it is widely read and considered.  They would much rather post to a board that filters out abuse than get their post lost among mindless ranting and petty bickering.  On "The Wall" you can be assured that industry professionals regard this policy highly and visit the board often.  It saves everybody time and trouble to have fewer higher quality posts.

Lastly after spending years developing this website I am not about to let jealous people use the Forum to destroy the reputation I have spent so long to build up.

OTHER Website FAQ's

Who is Surf?

Do you work in radio?

Do you do websites for anybody in radio?

How do you make money at this?

Why does WPHT have a 2 minute rule?

How can I improve reception on my radio?

Q - Who's Surf?  Why the "handle" and not your real name?
A - Surf is just a nickname given to me by a lady friend and it just stuck.  This site is not about me (well OK I get the chance to vent my opinion now and again) so I decided to keep using that handle.  I'm just a regular shmoe that listens to talk radio and can type fast.  You can read more on the About Us page.

Q - Do you work in radio?
A - God no!  I don't have the talent or the patience for that line of work plus the pay cut would kill me.  One of the reasons radio people will talk openly to me is because they know that I'm not secretly angling for their job or any other job in radio.  I have no hidden agenda and no ego in this.

Q - I see you did some work for <insert random host name here> what about doing a page for <insert any other random host name here>?
A - There is a standing offer for free space and technical help for ANY local host. It's really up to them. Some are just too busy or simply not interested in the Net.  We help when asked but otherwise leave them alone.  They have enough to worry about without being bothered by "get a lifers" on the Net.  We are here to support, not annoy.

Q - How do you make money off this site?
A - I don't, any money from book referrals go to charity.

Q - Why does WPHT have a 2 minute rule?
A - WPHT Program Director, Tom Bigby, left this in response to a post on the message board about that in January 2001.  ***"Who started this silly Two Minute Rule anyway..(wink)...Hey it works and there are exceptions to every rule... the Hosts that work for us Know when they can break them..but I will tell you this..There are very few callers that have more than 2 mins of entertaining things to say.  Most of the people that bitch about the rule are people who just want to hear themselves talk....... When I did this I did it with a lot of research and thought.. It has worked well for WIP..... Our Ratings in our target Demos are about where we want them to be....and the station does well in the real numbers that counts...(the bottom line)... PHT is ahead of where we thought it would be, Probably because DB went away but we still have a lot of growing to do and it will come in Time... Heritage radio stations have Heritage..and that my friends comes with time.."***

Q - How can I improve reception on my radio?
A - There are numerous tips and helpful hints as well as radio testing and product reviews in our Radio Testing Feature Section

to be continued...
